BREAKING: Suspect in White House-area shooting dead; bystander wounded, officials say

The suspect involved in a shooting near the White House is dead, and one bystander was wounded, according to a White House statement confirmed by multiple law enforcement officials.

The incident, which unfolded earlier Saturday near the White House complex, prompted an immediate and significant security response, including a brief lockdown of the area as Secret Service agents engaged the armed suspect.

Authorities say the situation escalated rapidly when gunfire erupted near a security perimeter close to Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

Secret Service personnel responded within moments, exchanging fire with the suspect and bringing the threat to an end.

Officials confirmed that the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

A bystander who was caught in the crossfire sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not yet been released.

Fox News correspondent Alex Hogan reported that the moments leading up to the shooting involved a fast-moving confrontation near a secured checkpoint, with law enforcement moving quickly to contain the threat and evacuate civilians from the immediate area.

The White House confirmed that there is no ongoing threat, and the lockdown that had been briefly imposed was lifted after the scene was secured.

Security in the surrounding area remains heightened as investigators continue to process evidence and review surveillance footage.

The FBI and Secret Service are jointly leading the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, including the identity of the suspect and possible motive.

Officials have not yet released further details.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
