Two people were wounded in a shooting near the White House, prompting a brief security lockdown that has since been lifted, according to Fox News congressional correspondent Chad Pergram and multiple law enforcement sources.
The incident unfolded near the complex shortly after reports of gunfire were heard in the vicinity of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House perimeter.
The U.S. Secret Service quickly responded to the scene and engaged the suspect.
According to reporting cited by Pergram and other officials, a gunman opened fire near a security checkpoint outside the White House. Secret Service personnel returned fire, striking the suspect and bringing the situation under control within minutes.
Authorities confirmed that two individuals were injured in the exchange including the suspected shooter and a civilian bystander. Both were transported to a nearby hospital.
The condition of the wounded individuals has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Eyewitness accounts from journalists in the area described hearing multiple rapid gunshots, with some reporting dozens of shots fired during the chaotic moments.
Members of the press corps were briefly instructed to shelter in place inside the White House briefing room as security forces secured the area.
FBI Director Kash Patel said federal agents were assisting the Secret Service in the ongoing investigation. Officials have not yet released a motive for the shooting or confirmed the identity of the suspect.
The White House lockdown was later lifted after authorities determined the immediate threat had been neutralized.
