President Donald Trump criticized Chicago leaders following a violent Memorial Day weekend that saw five Chicago police officers injured after being struck by a car during what authorities described as a “teen takeover” gathering on the city’s West Side.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Teen takeover in Chicago. Five officers badly hurt. Mayor and Governor are terrible. Should call for help!”
The incident happened early Sunday morning near South Loomis Street as officers attempted to disperse a large crowd of teenagers gathered in the area.
Police said an 18-year-old driver allegedly traveled the wrong way before crashing into multiple officers, a squad car, a pole, and a fence. Authorities later recovered a firearm from the vehicle. All five officers were hospitalized and listed in fair condition.
The suspect, identified as Rashad Johnson, now faces multiple charges, including five counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and criminal damage to government property.
The chaotic weekend also included numerous shootings across Chicago.
Reports indicated at least 25 people were shot during the holiday weekend, with several incidents involving teenagers.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned the unauthorized gatherings and urged parents to monitor their children more closely, saying accountability should not rest solely on law enforcement. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has not directly responded to Trump’s latest remarks.
