NFL fans are feeling for Jake Browning's wife after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released the veteran quarterback just days before the start of the 2026 regular season.
The Buccaneers officially released Browning on August 30, as the team trimmed its roster to the required 53 players.
Tampa Bay ultimately chose undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels as Baker Mayfield's backup, ending Browning's short stint with the organization.
Browning had signed with Tampa Bay in March after spending the previous several seasons as Joe Burrow's backup in Cincinnati.
The Buccaneers viewed his NFL experience as valuable depth behind Mayfield, particularly after Browning had shown he could perform as a starter during the 2023 season.
But while Browning was fighting for a roster spot, his wife, Stephanie Niles, had already been preparing for life as an NFL wife in Tampa.
Niles became a viral sensation during Browning's time with the Cincinnati Bengals because of her eye-catching game-day outfits.
After the couple moved to Tampa, she revealed plans to continue the tradition, with reports highlighting her preparations for new Buccaneers-themed looks during the upcoming season.
Then came the roster cut.
Fans immediately connected the dots online, joking that Niles had apparently been preparing an entire season's worth of outfits — only for Browning to lose his roster spot before the regular season even began.
The reaction quickly spread across social media, with fans expressing sympathy for the couple and joking about the timing.
“Brutal,” became the common reaction.
But the football decision itself was less about Browning suddenly becoming unwanted and more about a competitive quarterback battle.
Browning entered training camp competing for the No. 2 position behind Mayfield. Tampa Bay ultimately favored Daniels, whose preseason performances helped him win the job.
Daniels completed 27 of 44 passes for 239 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions during the preseason while also contributing 37 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Those performances convinced Tampa Bay that the 23-year-old rookie had earned the backup role.
Browning, meanwhile, had limited preseason opportunities but demonstrated his experience during his time in Cincinnati. He owns a career regular-season record that includes 10 starts, and in 2023 he stepped in for the injured Burrow and helped the Bengals win four of his seven starts.
The Buccaneers' decision means Browning is now a free agent, giving him an opportunity to find another NFL roster before or during the season.
For fans, however, the timing has created a much more lighthearted storyline.
Stephanie Niles had just transitioned from being a Bengals fan favorite to an NFL wife in Tampa — and was reportedly preparing her Buccaneers wardrobe for the season.
Now, instead of showing off those carefully planned outfits at Buccaneers games, fans are wondering where the next stop will be.
The NFL moves quickly, and Browning's release could ultimately prove temporary if another team needs quarterback depth.
What happens to all those custom Buccaneers outfits?
